Webster High: Tulsa Public Schools Cheer Team Spotlight – Presented by Barracuda Staffing

Webster High School cheer coach Lori Wixon says that in order to be on her team, you have to prove you want to do it.

“They have to have a certain grade point average, no suspensions, and be a positive role model,” she said. “All my cheerleaders have a mentoring group with lower classmen and with the Webster Middle School cheer team. They are dedicated to not only the cheer team but also to Webster.”

Keondrah Ferring, Webster cheer co-captain, says that helping spread school spirit is one of her favorite things about cheer.

“I enjoy getting to be part of the school spirit and helping others get more spirit,” she said. “It is great to be part of a big team and I like how we are all there for each other and how positive our team is.”

The team attended the Universal Cheerleaders Association camp and had three cheerleaders make All-American. Best Jumper, Best Dancer, Most Spirit, and a Superior trophy were other awards brought home by the Webster cheer team. They also made it to State for the first time in over ten years.

Co-captain, Cameron Chaffin, knew once she saw the Webster cheer team in action that she wanted to be a part of it.

“When I came to Webster High School, I knew I was going to cheer after seeing how spirited the cheer team was,” she said. “I enjoy being a part of this team and having the role of a leader. The thing I enjoy the most would have to be cheering at Friday night football games, getting to tumble and cheer on our football team.”

Wixon says that one of the most important things for her team is unity.

“I am a firm believer in team building,” she said. “So at every practice we do team building games. We also do a swim party and a team lock in. We not only include the high school but also the middle school team that they mentor. Also we do fun community service projects like passing out water and cheering on runners at the Route 66 Marathon or sing Christmas carols and out local Westside events.”

Webster Alumni cheerleader Samantha Wixon is the assistant coach for the team.
