Sand Springs’ Chris Kirby: Character Counts Presented By Cecil & Sons Discount Tires

The Sand Springs “Character Counts” honor goes to Chris Kirby, a senior wrestler for the Sandites. Kirby has had a great season so far with a record of 27-8 in the 160 pound weight class.

“I think the key for me has really just been working hard and just really wanting to win,” said Kirby.

Kirby competed in the Kansas City Invitational in December and won his first six matches before eventually placing seventh. He is also a two-time state placer, finishing fourth during his sophomore and junior seasons.

With that past success and the good start this season, Kirby has big expectation for the rest of the year.

“My goal for this season is to make it to the State Finals and win the whole thing,” said Kirby, “I just have to keep driving and really just learning and improving to be the best.”

A big key to Kirby’s success is the amount of work he puts in during practice and the extra work he puts in outside of practice. That work ethic alone says a lot about his character.

“Character to me is just always doing the right thing, like just always helping your teammates out to make them better, because at the end of the day, it’s going to make your team that much stronger,” said Kirby.

After high school Kirby plans on working and attending Tulsa Community College. He wants to study either business or criminal justice.
